How To Keep A Uniform Fresh Through The Summer Heat

Summer is the hardest season on a uniform. Heat and sweat turn every shift into a battle with odor, and by August even a fresh load of laundry can struggle to keep up. Welcome to Stinky Vest Season, the stretch of the year when gear smells its worst and staying ahead of it takes a real routine.

Quick answer: To keep a uniform fresh through Stinky Season, clean often with detergent sheets, add the booster to eliminate odor in heavy loads, neutralize odor on gear you cannot wash with spray, and dry everything fully before storing.

Why is summer the worst season for uniform odor?

Higher temperatures mean more sweat, and more sweat means more of the body oil and odor compounds that soak into fabric and gear. Add hours in body armor that traps heat against the body, and a uniform in July takes far more abuse than the same uniform in January. The odor load climbs right along with the thermometer.

Step 1: Wash more often, and wash right

In peak season, uniforms need washing more frequently, not less. Use one Laundry Detergent Sheet per load to clean out the sweat and grime a hot shift leaves behind. Clean laundry is the foundation everything else builds on.

Step 2: Eliminate the odor in your heavy loads

Cleaning is only half the fight in summer. For the loads carrying deep, set in odor, add the Laundry Booster, the dedicated odor eliminator, to the same wash. The sheets clean while the booster clears the smell the heat drove into the fibers.

Step 3: Neutralize odor on the gear you cannot wash

Body armor, boots, and bags cannot go in the machine, but they bake in the heat all shift. Keep the spray on hand and hit them on the spot. It uses odor absorbing molecules that neutralize odor at the source, works the second it lands with no wait, and is safe on body armor.

Step 4: Dry fully and store dry

Heat and leftover moisture are what odor loves most. Dry every load completely and let gear air out before it goes back in a locker or bag. Storing anything damp in summer is how odor comes roaring back overnight.

How do you keep gear fresh on a long shift?

Stash a spray in your bag and hit trouble spots between calls. A few seconds of neutralizing odor mid shift keeps it from ever setting in, so the gear is manageable by the time you get home to the wash.
